About Guam History Day
Guam History Day, a Guam Preservation Trust project, was initiated by stakeholders of historic preservation as a strategic element in the development of a community action to protect and preserve Guam's historic sites, culture, and perspectives for the benefit of Guam's people and future.
The Guam History Day is not just one day, it's a yearlong program that involves middle and high students as they creatively develop their perspectives of Guam's history through research and reading, presentations in writing, visual projects, and performance.
Guam History Day Curriculum Program
The Guam History Day program is linked to the National History Day program (www.nhd.org), a national curriculum program for middle and high school students that allows for students to develop the following attributes that are critical for future successes:
" Critical thinking and problem-solving skills;
" Research and reading skills;
" Oral and written communication and presentation skills; and
The Guam History Day program breathes life into the traditional history curriculum by engaging students and teachers in a hands-on and in-depth approach to studying the past. By focusing on a theme, students are introduced to a new organizational structure to learn history.
What are the Benefits for Teachers and Students?
The benefits are multitude and that it involves a powerful learning process for both the student and the teachers:
" With this program, the student controls his or her own learning. Students select topics from the broad theme that meet their interests and passion. Program expectations and guidelines are explicitly provided for students, but the research journey is created by the process and is unique to the historic research;
" With this program, students will be able to learn about their heritage and develop essential life skills by fostering academic achievement and intellectual curiosity. In addition, students will be able to develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills that will help them manage the use of information now and in the future;
" Since the student's greatest ally in the research process is the teacher, the program supports the teacher by providing instructional materials and scheduled program workshops and courses for teachers.
